Dance team demands physical skills such as strength, coordination, flexibility and endurance as well as teamwork. Dance training is highly recommended; however, specific dance team technique is not required and is a part of the coaching process. As a year-round activity, it also requires the continued self-discipline and challenge of maintaining high levels of enthusiasm and commitment as well as academic eligibility. Any student enrolled at Sion High School with at least a 2.5 grade point average and who has the desire to participate actively, attend all practices and performances, and work hard as both an individual and a member of a team may audition.

Competition News 2016-2017

Kansas City Classic ~ Liberty, Missouri – The first competition and State qualifier was the Kansas City Classic in Liberty in December.  The Sion Dance Team placed 1st in kick, 1st in pom, and earned the overall high score for the division plus a judges’ award for kick technique.

Chicagoland Regional Dance Championship ~ Chicago, Illinois – In early January, the team traveled to Chicago to compete in the Chicagoland UDA Regional Competition.  This year’s competition was especially competitive since all the teams in the High Kick and Large Pom divisions were Finalists in previous UDA National Competitions.  The team placed 2nd in kick and 4th in pom.

National Dance Team Championship ~ Orlando, Florida – On the first weekend in February, the team traveled to Orlando to join 235 high school teams competing in the UDA National Dance Team Championship. The Pom, Jazz, and Hip Hop categories are divided into Small, Medium and Large divisions by squad size rather than school size.  Small in population but mighty in spirit Sion competed in the Large Pom semi-finals and missed making Finals by one place. High Kick, the only category with no allowances for squad or school size, had a record number of 34 teams from 18 states competing through preliminary, semi-final, and final rounds. All of the hard work and extra training paid off as the Storm danced beautifully to place 4th in the nation right behind last year’s national champions, ranking in the Top Ten in High Kick for the 8th consecutive year.

Missouri State Dance Team Championship ~ St. Louis, Missouri -- The competition season came to a close on February 25th at the Missouri State Championship in St Louis.  The team placed 1st in  Kick and 1st in Pom, earning the high point score to become overall 3A State Champions for the eighth year in a row. Vive Sion!
